We work in small, agile DevOps teams with colleagues around the world.

Following extensive investment across our Technology and Digital domains, we are currently seeking an experienced Principal Software Engineer.

Cybersecurity Science and Analytics empowers Cybersecurity in protecting the bank by leveraging data and innovative capabilities to create effective and proactive security measures, as well as enabling data driven business decisions. The CS&A mission is critical to the protection of HSBC customers, the HSBC brand, HSBC information, financial assets and ultimately shareholder value, through ensuring HSBC remains a market leader in protecting our customers and assets.

Analytic pipelines and applications are crucial in helping cybersecurity operations teams to solve difficult, large-scale problems. Given the breadth, complexity and size of cybersecurity, these solutions are often only viable through leveraging big data analytics and machine learning in the cloud.

The Principal Software Engineer role is responsible as a development lead for designing, building and maintaining multiple Cybersecurity analytic pipelines and applications, partnering closely with the Hunt team and Global Cybersecurity Operations teams.

The role provides mentorship for a team of lead and junior engineers, to develop best practices and aim to help improve the team’s overall performance.


What you will be doing;

  • Develop and maintain highly capable team of software engineers and data scientists focused on delivering high quality data and analytic focused applications in the cloud.
  • Design, build, deliver, and maintain multiple Cybersecurity Metrics dashboards, reports, and applications for key partners including the cybersecurity reporting team and for key stakeholders including regional CISOs and GRC leads.
  • Build and maintain big data analytics pipelines running in the cloud.
  • Deliver software systems while following Agile best practices.
  • Mentor junior members of the team on best practices and aiming to help improve the team’s overall performance.
  • Partner and collaborate closely with the other parts of CS&A to jointly solve problems for customers and stakeholders.
  • Participation in special projects on behalf of HSBC and CS&A leadership.

Requirements

What you will bring to the role;


To be successful in this role you should have proven experience within the Technology sector with knowledge of the following skills:

  • A strong background in software engineering with experience in Full stack development and data analytics / data visualization.
  • Experience building and maintaining complex Business Intelligence dashboards and reports in PowerBI (preferred), Tableau, Splunk or similar systems.
  • Experience in building and maintaining complex cloud based applications in Azure (preferred) or other major cloud platforms.
  • Experience in PMP/Prince2, SCRUM, and Kanban program management methods
  • An ability to communicate complex and technical issues to diverse audiences, orally and in writing, in an easily-understood, authoritative and actionable manner.
  • Ability to orchestrate, manage and successfully implement major procedural and technological change within a complex, global organization

Technical Skills

  • Fullstack application development using Python, NodeJS, HTML/CSS/JS
  • Data analytics experience in Databricks/Spark and/or analytics experience with large scale data warehouses such as Snowflake, Presto, or Azure Synapse.
  • Experience with data processing using shell scripts including python, bash, or similar including log parsing/extraction, data cleansing, and data analytics.
  • Experience with the python data science ecosystem (jupyter, pandas, numpy, matplotlib, etc.)
  • Intermediate to advanced SQL experience
  • (Preferred) Experience building dashboards and reports using PowerBI / DAX

Industry Experience and Qualifications

Candidates will be evaluated primarily upon their ability to demonstrate the competencies required to be successful in the role, as described above. For reference, the typical work experience and educational background of candidates in this role are as follows:

  • 8+ years of experience in software engineering
  • 5+ years of experience with building applications in Azure.
  • Bachelors or Masters in computer science, engineering, or IT
  • Any relevant Azure certifications would be a plus such as Azure Developer Associate, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, Azure Data Scientist Associate, or Azure Data Engineer Associate
  • Past expertise working in cybersecurity would be a plus, such as threat detection, threat intelligence, malware analysis, vulnerability management, security operations, red team/blue team, risk management, or security engineering.

This role is based in London however we are open to considering other UK locations and home working.
